Surry Hills 17: Clisdell Street to Belvoir Street

Clisdell Street is quite strange, split into two levels on the side of the hill. It is the western edge of the “slum clearance” of the 1940s and 1950s that appears in Ruth Park’s Surry Hills novels. On the downhill side a large converted warehouse holds the Australian Opera, and in Belvoir Street a converted tomato sauce factory is now the Belvoir Theatre.
