You don’t need to know much about art to know that Australians’ have a tendency for mass hysteria when it comes to issues about art. The controversy surrounding the cost of Jackson Pollock’s Blue Poles for example. The outrage at William Dobell winning the Archibald Prize; the shock of a replica of Michelangelo’s David on display in a public shopping centre; the loathing that met the abstract sculpture known as the “Yellow Peril” in Melbourne; the furore that was at the exhibition of the painting Piss Christ. And so on and so on and so on it goes. Australian’s love their sport but when it comes to art I’m afraid we’re amongst the Philistines.
